Disaster Preparedness
HCMC is the designated Regional Hospital Resource Center for the 7-county metro region and provides key leadership and coordination services for disaster preparedness and response in Minnesota. HCMC Emergency Preparedness staff coordinates development and implementation of disaster plans for health care facilities in the Metro region, trains disaster responders, and develops and disseminates educational materials in the Metro area and around the state.

Regional EMS Communications (911)
Hennepin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Dispatchers operate the West Medical Resource Control Center (MRCC). In addition to local EMS functions, MRCC facilitates communications between paramedics, hospitals and physicians; monitors local hospital capacities and statewide EMS communications, and provides core communication functions for emergency incident dispatch/management and disaster response across the state of Minnesota.

Specialty Care Centers
HCMC includes the Traumatic Brain Injury Center, the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorder Center, the Hennepin Stroke Center, the Hennepin Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Hennepin Kidney Transplant Program, the Knapp Rehabilitation Center, and other nationally recognized care centers and programs which offer specialty treatment and rehabilitation care to patients from across Minnesota.

Hyperbaric Medicine
HCMC was the first and only Minnesota facility to offer hyperbaric oxygen treatment for over 40 years, providing continuous 24/7 availability to patients from across Minnesota and surrounding states. A highly qualified team of nurses, technicians, and board certified hyperbaric physicians provides emergency treatment to critically ill patients and scheduled inpatient and outpatient treatments. A new, state of the art facility will open on the HCMC campus in Spring 2012.

Acute Care, 24/7
HCMC houses the largest and busiest Emergency Department in Minnesota, the Hennepin Stroke Center, and state-of-the-art surgical suites and medical, pediatric and neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICU's). HCMC provides premier acute medical and surgical care and is unique in providing 24/7 treatment of dental emergencies. Among U.S. hospitals, HCMC pioneered the utilization of pre-hospital activation of the cardiac catheterization lab for treatment of myocardial infarction and is one of the nation's leaders in door-to-open vessel time. HCMC also has among the fastest door-to-needle times (IV t-PA) nationwide for treatment of stroke. Telemedecine and teleradiology capacity extend HCMC expertise statewide.

Community & Convenience Clinics
Broad access to primary and specialty care through multiple clinics provides patients with acute, chronic, and preventive care. The Neurology and Specialty Clinic is located in Chaska. Primary care clinics are located in Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Richfield, and in Minneapolis on East Lake Street, in the Whittier neighborhood, and in St. Anthony Village (to open in late October). Convenience Care Clinics are located at Walmart stores in Bloomington and Eden Prairie.

Medical Research
HCMC is a premier research institution. The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation oversees medical research conducted at HCMC, which ranks within the top 7% of institutions nationwide receiving funding from the National Institutes of Health. Last year, HCMC faculty and staff published more than 240 clinical articles and book chapters.

Level I Trauma Care & Outreach Training
As a Level I Adult Trauma Center (the first in Minnesota) and a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, HCMC receives patients by ambulance and helicopter and fixed wing aircraft from across Minnesota and a 5 state region. Premier trauma care includes acute resuscitation, hospital care, and rehabilitation. An extensive trauma network and outreach staff collaborate with clinicians around the state to provide top quality trauma care and educate community members on trauma prevention.

Burn Center
The HCMC Burn Center has provided inpatient, acute, and rehabilitative care for patients with burns, frostbite, and other complex wounds for more than 30 years. Unique in its on-site access to burn care specialists 7 days a week, the Burn Center contains a new 17-bed inpatient unit and an Ambulatory Burn and Wound Clinic for outpatient treatments.

Poison Center
The Hennepin Regional Poison Center is available 24/7 for calls from the community and health care professionals from across Minnesota. Poison information, treatment guidelines, clinical consultation, active surveillance, and community and clinical education through the Poison Center enable top quality treatment of toxic exposures, education and prevention, avoidance of unnecessary medical visits and costs, and detection of public health threats across Minnesota.

Medical Education & Training
HCMC was the first teaching hospital in MN. More than 50% of physicians practicing in Minnesota have trained at HCMC. Each year, HCMC educates and trains more than 20,000 physicians, nurses, paramedics, EMT's, technicians, social workers, physician assistants, speech pathologists, and other health care providers through HCMC-based programs, off-site training courses, webcasts, and other website-based learning opportunities. HCMC also reaches more than 50,000 community members across the state with trauma and poison prevention training.

Psychiatric Emergency Services
HCMC was first in the nation to establish a hospital-based Crisis Intervention Center. Now called Acute Psychiatric Services (APS), it is unique in the state in providing 24/7 access to psychiatrists on-site as well as to the HCMC Emergency Department, for rapid assessment and treatment of mental illness and underlying medical conditions. Extensive collaboration of APS with community partners enables effective therapy through day treatment programs and/or ambulatory clinic care, low admission rates, and avoidance of unnecessary hospitalization costs. Last year, APS treated patients from 55 Minnesota counties and provided on-site and community-based training of health professionals and Crisis Intervention Teams (police officers).
